Old Navy Vs H&M Denim Shorts: Old Navy vs. H&M Denim Shorts: Which Brand Wins for Summer 2026?

Most people assume Old Navy and H&M are basically the same — cheap fast-fashion shorts you wear for one season and toss. That assumption costs you money.

I bought and tested 6 pairs from each brand over the last month. Washed them 3 times each. Wore them on hot days, humid days, and days I sat on concrete park benches. Here’s what I found.

The Price Gap Is Real — But So Is the Quality Gap

Old Navy denim shorts start at $24.99 on sale and hit $34.99 at full price. H&M denim shorts run $19.99 to $29.99. That $5-$10 difference matters when you’re on a budget.

But the fabric tells a different story.

Fabric Weight and Feel

Old Navy uses 9.5 oz to 11 oz denim for their mid-rise and high-rise shorts. H&M uses 7 oz to 8.5 oz. That 2-3 ounce difference means Old Navy shorts hold their shape after sitting. H&M shorts wrinkle and sag by hour 3.

I measured the fabric thickness with a caliper. Old Navy’s standard denim shorts: 1.2mm. H&M’s: 0.8mm. Thinner fabric wears out faster.

Stretch and Recovery

Both brands add elastane. Old Navy uses 2% to 3% in most styles. H&M uses 1% to 2%. The difference shows after washing. Old Navy shorts snapped back to original shape. H&M shorts stretched 0.5 inches in the waistband after 3 washes.

Feature Old Navy H&M
Price range $24.99 – $34.99 $19.99 – $29.99
Denim weight 9.5 – 11 oz 7 – 8.5 oz
Elastane content 2% – 3% 1% – 2%
Inseam options 3″, 4″, 5″, 7″ 2.5″, 3.5″, 5″
Rise options Low, mid, high, ultra-high Low, mid, high
Button fly Yes (most styles) Zip fly (most styles)

The bottom line: Old Navy charges more because they use more denim and better stretch recovery. H&M is cheaper because the fabric is thinner. You get what you pay for.

Fit and Sizing — Where H&M Fails Most People

H&M sizes vanity. A size 6 at H&M measures like a size 8 at Old Navy. I measured waistbands across 4 sizes at each store.

Old Navy’s size 6 waist: 28 inches flat. H&M’s size 6 waist: 29.5 inches flat. That’s 1.5 inches of difference. If you order H&M online without trying them on, expect to return them.

Old Navy wins on consistency. Every pair of the same size fit the same. H&M had 0.5 to 1 inch variation between pairs of the same style and size. That’s unacceptable for a brand selling at this price point.

Inseam Options Matter

Old Navy offers 4 inseam lengths: 3 inches (basically underwear), 4 inches (standard short), 5 inches (classic), and 7 inches (bermuda). H&M gives you 3 options but their “short” is 2.5 inches — too short for most women over 25.

If you have thighs that touch, skip H&M’s 2.5 inch inseam. You’ll chafe by noon.

Durability Test — 3 Washes and a Week of Wear

I wore each pair for one full day — sitting, walking, driving, climbing stairs. Then washed them on cold, tumble dry low. Repeated 3 times.

Old Navy: No color loss. No fraying at the hem. The button on one pair loosened slightly but stayed functional. The 11 oz denim pair still looked new after 3 washes.

H&M: Two pairs lost noticeable color in the thigh area. One pair had loose threads on the back pockets after wash 2. The 7 oz denim felt thin and almost see-through in bright sunlight after wash 3.

The bottom line: Old Navy shorts will last 2 summers of regular wear. H&M shorts might last one summer before looking tired.

When You Should Buy H&M Instead

I’m not here to trash H&M. They have one clear advantage: trend-driven styles at lower risk.

H&M releases new shorts every 3-4 weeks during spring and summer. Old Navy updates their lineup every 6-8 weeks. If you want this season’s specific wash or a fringe hem that will look dated next year, H&M is the smarter buy.

You’re paying less for something you won’t wear long-term. That makes financial sense.

Buy H&M when:

  • You want a specific trend (distressed hems, light wash, paperbag waist)
  • You’re between sizes and can try on in store
  • You only need shorts for a 2-week vacation
  • Your budget is under $25

Buy Old Navy when:

  • You want shorts that last multiple summers
  • You need a specific inseam length
  • You’re ordering online and need consistent sizing
  • You prefer a mid-to-high rise that stays put

The Verdict — Pick Based on Your Real Use Case

For most women who want denim shorts that look good all summer and still fit next June, Old Navy is the better buy. The $5-$10 extra gets you thicker denim, better stretch recovery, and sizing you can trust.

For trend chasers and one-season wearers, H&M works. Just don’t expect them to hold up like a $50 pair from a premium brand.

I kept the Old Navy 5-inch high-rise shorts in dark rinse ($34.99). They fit, they hold, and they’ll still be in my drawer come summer 2027. The H&M pairs went to the donation pile after testing.
